97 ram fuel pump??

anyone know any easy way to check fuel pump or relay or detailed instructions how to replace fuel pump on '97 ram 1500 5.9L. 8cyl. Looked on pavementsucks website for details on replacing ball joints and bearing hub assemblies but there is nothing on fuel pump. All 94-99 ram owners should check that site out. I was doing 65mph and suddenly heard a small "pop" or "poof" and the truck stalled. It wouldn't start immediately afterwards but about 5 mins later it started, idled very roughly and then died almost immediately. It's been around 0 to 5 below zero for about two-three days here and the truck had been sitting with about a quarter tank of gas until I filled it up and then left on a 100 mile trip. This stall occured about 75 miles into that trip. Hiway patrol said it was water in tank so I added a botle of HEET and that did not work. Any help is appreciated.

Re: 97 ram fuel pump??

on the fuel rail there is a shrader valve you need to connect a fuel pressure gauge....cycle the key and check for pressure...if not jump the relay pin 87 and 30 and re-check for fuel pressure...relay is in the pdc

Re: 97 ram fuel pump??

as for hour hard it is you have disconnect the fuel filling tube then drop the 2 holding traps with the tnak being held up by something else depending on the work area then you drop the tank about 3 to 4 inchs

disconnect the fuel and electrical connects than drop the tank the rest of the way the fuel pump is held inside the gas tank by a snap ring carefully remove said snap ring a pair offlet head screwdrives as breaking it would

probly only server to agitate oneself careful the pump is spring loaded to help the pump seat pop it out put new one in press down and hold into place and reinsert snap ring may want to have an extra set of hands for getting the full pump back in the tank and secured

then the rest is just reverse of remove on a side note either do it when the tank is close to empty or siphon out and store the gas trying to do it while near full would be a huge mistake as witt mine and probly yours its a 28 gallon tank at 8 pounds a gallon so full it will way close to 220 to 230 lbs

Re: 97 ram fuel pump??

When mine took a crap on a busy highway tow truck driver scooped it up and took it back home, he said it sounded like a fuel pump problem , he asked me if i had a rubber mallet and preceded to hit the underside of the gas tank up toward the front while i turned it over and it fired up ,didnt stay running for long but got it off the truck and through the yard where i could work on it.So hope this can help somebody!
