Transaxle swap 4T60-E / 6-191
Hi All, I'm looking for some info on a transaxle swap. I had a 1996 Grand am se with a 3100 v6. The car was totaled by a deer. I bought a 1995 Grand Am GT with a 3100 v6 thinking that the transaxles were the same. (da)
The Gt has a 4T60-E transaxle. It is ininprinted on the oil pan of the transaxle. The 96 SE doesn't have any thing inprinted on the pan. The case has GMPT B 747 24204628 cast on it. I assume this is a 6-191? Can I put the 6-191 into the Gt where the 4T60-e is? I really don't want to buy another transaxle when I have this one with low miles on it. I know the 4T60-E is a better transaxle but this car is used to go back and forth to work. no racing. I can also switch the prom if need be for shifting. I have both cars in my shop now. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks Passnbyu |

Re: Transaxle swap 4T60-E / 6-191
Ps. Just wanted to add what happened to the 4T60-E that is in the Gt now. The car will only go in first gear. First gear is strong. When it gets up to around 20 mph and you let off the gas the idle comes back down. It will not engage till you bring it back up to the speed you are going. No reverse. Sorry about that. Just thought someone may know if its worth rebuilding.
Thanks again Passnbyu |

Re: Transaxle swap 4T60-E / 6-191
compare if both transmissions have vacuum modulator (the round gray part to the left of the main round transmission connector) also if both transmissions have the same type of connector and if both transmissions have same wires to nss they should be the same. Also you can scan your GT for transmission codes that should be the starting for every diagnosis. It could be as simple as shift solenoids or bad connection.
With transmissions always check transmission oil level first that 6-191 means v6 191 cubic inches engine size = 3.1 cubic cm or 3100 |

Re: Transaxle swap 4T60-E / 6-191
Hi, Thanks for the response.
They both look the same. Both have vacuum modulators in the same place. One thing I noticed so far was the Gt has two plugs going to the black shift indicator/controller. The SE only has one. It looks like I can switch them. It just bolts to the trans and the shift selector runs up thru the middle of it. The bell houseing one has 747 cast in the bell and the other has 746 or 745 I think on it. Thanks Again! Passnbyu |
