New Clutch but some problems on 84 720

After around 125k my 1984 720's clutch went out and I had it replaced a couple of days ago. After the repair, it would not go into reverse without grinding the gears unless you put it into 1st gear beforehand. I had no problems like this before replacing the clutch. In addition, after the repair, the pedal had very little travel, around an inch, before engaging.

I had both the slave and master cylinder replaced at the mechanic's suggestion and with the replacement of the master cylinder, there was some improvement but not much. The replacement of the slave cylinder was first but made no difference.

What could be the problem?
Could the installation been done incorrectly?
The system was bled repeatedly. Pumping does no good nor does there appear to be any sponginess in the pedal.

Other than the extremely short travel of the clutch, it seems to run fine but, it just seems odd to me. I mean, I had to remove the carpet used to protect the original carpet to be able to get it into gear easily. Oh, and the clutch seems to be really heavy. I don't know if that means anything or not. The mechanic said it was just because it was a new clutch but, something just doesn't seem right.

Your help is appreciated.
