Re: #018 at Hampton Downs Raceway

Hey Martin - That is a great shot!

I am concerned that the driver and his passenger appear a bit distracted by something though?

I guess that's not as bad as chatting on your mobile phone while driving an F1.

Re: #018 at Hampton Downs Raceway

Better than chatting on the phone and crashing like another F1 driver has done...

Re: #018 at Hampton Downs Raceway

Actually the way I heard the story was that he dropped his phone and then crashed. I don't know if the pending crash caused him to drop the phone, or the dropped phone caused him to crash though.

Kind of one of those chicken/egg scenarios.

= = = = = =

In other news - here's another shot of #018, this time displayed at the "Fresh Zealand Festival of Motor Sport" - that's a new one.

Click to get a bigger one, and see the rest of his album if you are interested.

I bet someone with a lot of free time on their hands could find a few more shots from this event.

Well I don't have free time, but still managed to find other Hampton Downs shots - also clickable:

More in this album:

New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing 2010

Great to see the car's new owner out using it!

Re: #018 at Hampton Downs Raceway

I know... It's the easy answer.

I tend to think that the real story is much more interesting, but you can't tell it in 15 seconds, and to the casual observer they won't know what the heck you're talking about.

Re: #018 at Hampton Downs Raceway

I'm not very good about F1 roadcar's so let's do one thing clear now about this specific car:

This is an basic F1 road car, which has hadded some "GTR" parts, like the front end of the car, GTR rear wing and new wheels, which are not same than GTR's or LM had?
Everything else seems to be F1 roadcar.
What about the engine, basic 627 horse power V12 or is it striped to LM spec?
And the gearbox is normal F1 road car or...?

If the case is this what I think it is, the changes defenitely suits very well on that car. Seems there is quite many stannard F1 road cars, which has that GTR rearwing added? Seen images white and silver ones atleast.
Defenitely makes the car more "racing spirit"!

That's why I loved right after first sight to the LM. The McLaren F1 got perfect with those added racing parts. Just perfect. Nothing was missing.
The truly racing feeling.

I took some time and told the real story as a comment to the first image in his album. Not sure if he'll be pleased to see that or not. Given the sign that was there with the car it certainly was not his fault for having the wrong description. I also asked him to share larger versions of his images - keep those fingers crossed with me.

Sami - essentially the front and rear wings and the front wheel arches are much like those on the LMs or the 1995/1996 GTRs. The vents in the nose piece over the front wheels mimics the 1997 GTRs. The engines in this car and its near-twin, #073, have been upgraded to LM-spec, but the gearboxes remain standard F1 bits so the excessive gear whine would not be present.

They are what they are - very special, factory modified McLaren F1 road cars - the rarest of the breed. They aren't and will never be LMs in my eyes, and I think some of the owners of these cars are doing a great disservice to history by referring to them as such.

Especially if you are going to put out a sign with the display - telling someone in quick conversation that it's an LM is one thing, but when you go to the trouble of having a display sign made, you should have the time and the space to tell the whole story.

Hello all from Down under. Long time viewer, first time poster....

Just a quick note I'm hugely impressed at the wealth of information you have on this forum!! You all do a brilliant job.

Here's the details for #018 blasting by an M6GT at the Bruce McLaren festival at Hampton Downs....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rieK13iTi0

And also some impressive driving from an Integra driver to try keep up with him at Hampton Downs again from a track day...

#018's owner races a 997 GT3 Cup Car as track car so he knows how to pedal a car round a race circuit!

Thank you for the details of those nose, wheels and tail changes.
I agree with you 100% this one. There is just 5 LM's + one prototype. If you do LM replica, it's not real LM. Even you do everything precisely same, it' not the real LM.

Great first post! Thanks for joining us.

If you have more than casual knowledge of who AB is, perhaps you could speak with him about the sign issue, please?
