Arrow Question about an old Jacket

I saw this on ebay a few days ago and could of sworn I saw it before (late 90's), so I bought it today.. I'm not sure if it was a team jacket or just some Gulf promo or what?

If anyone knows anything I'd love to hear about it.

Best Dale...

Re: Question about an old Jacket

Looks like Gulf issued 'fan wear' to me. I just flipped through all my shots of the short tailed Gulf GTR hoping to see someone wearing one in a paddock shot or something, but all the jackets/parkas I saw looked like this mechanic's coveralls - same blue, and all the sponsor's logos sewn on.

BTW : Everything makes sense except for the "West" logo on that jacket. I don't recall whether the short tailed Gulf GTRs ever carried any tobacco advertising. DocGTR will probably have that answer.

I'm wondering it maybe that wasn't added on later by whomever owned it?

Re: Question about an old Jacket

I rummaged around a little more and found these pics from an old Ebay auction of what appear to be the Team issued jacket, though with the "Official Merchandise" tag, this one was probably also purchased at a race memorabilia booth at some event.

Impressive embroidery... yeah, I did just use the word embroidery.

I haven't seen those never anywhere, so good find defenitely!
May I ask, what search words did you found those jackets? I tryed many but none of those showed up.

Erik:
Thanks for the new image of #12R, seems to be even 1996 Le Mans.

I forgot what I searched to be honest, but I think I was searching for Bellm, Sala and Blundell as my key words on ebay when I came across it.

My suspicion is 'fan wear' too. I really can't remember even seen such a jacket been used by the GTC crew. And the 'West' seems a very odd one on it, Davidoff would have made more sense (1997), but the blue of the jacket hints more to 1996 colors. So I would say at least the 'West' is added later to the jacket.

REEMTSMA, the company behind West brand, moved after sponsoring Thomas Bscher's team West Competition 1995-96 seasons to sponsoring the McLaren's formula one team, so I doubt they had such connection with GTC Motorsport. And then Davidoff appeared only on the long tail GTRs 1997 jointly with Gulf, and then 1998 Bscher's 22R was fully Davidoff branded where allowed.

I have lately seen much of McLaren related stuff around eBay that most likely are from such 'creative minds'. A bit similarities with the fantasy models. Occasionally there have been also some genuine products and some of them even going for bargain prices. It's just how the seller has succeeded to list it on eBay.

Re: Question about an old Jacket

The graphic on Dale's new jacket looks somewhat similar to the one on the side of the GTC transporters from 1995. Different perspective, but similar concept anyway.

Re: Question about an old Jacket

I quickly checked the 1995 season books and some of the images show GTC personnel wearing quite similar style polo shirts. Still can't believe that in any race during the season they would have had the 'West' badge on their jackets.

Re: Question about an old Jacket

OK, so this all is saying to me; if you find one, it's lots of money.
Thanks DOC giving details this thing, again.

Re: Question about an old Jacket

One of the transporters was the first thing I thought of when I saw the jacket. The logo looks about the same as the one on the front of the jacket.. My first thought was maybe the transport drivers got a jacket at one time?

I saw it about 5 seconds in the start of this video a while back.

Re: Question about an old Jacket

I just got this reply from the seller.

Hey Dale - thanks for the heads up and yes, I think that this jacket was an insider deal. I used to live in Florida and went to the Daytona 24 hours all the time and went to Sebring for 22 years in a row. I got to know a vendor particularly well and one time she had one jacket that she knew that I would like. It was the middle'90s in Daytona and she said that I should enjoy it quietly. It was long before the F1 raced here, but after it raced in Europe (maybe 95?). It was a special deal for me, and I think that I paid $150.00 for it then. It's a great jacket, very unique and substantial. As far as I know, it could be one of a very small number in this country. Enjoy it in good health! Dry clean only!
Cheers - Ron
