99 Grand Prix P1870 Transmission Component Slipping

I have a 99 Grand Prix SE 3.1 engine with about 208K miles. About 3 days ago my SES light came on ...Took it to Auto Zone got the generic code, then went to an tranny shop and got the transmission component code. They took the pan out showed me the fluid was really really dirty, smelled a little burned and said I needed to either get a new valve body....There was no metal in the pan just very dirty fluid. The car drives like its brand new still...Nothing is slipping it's not shifting hard, it drives just fine. I spoke with another tranny shop over the phone and he gave a couple suggestions of either putting a cooling fan on because the P1870 code may just be that the tranny or the fluid is overheating, just gettin a valve body, or getting an rebuilt tranny. The first place I went to serviced the tranny but the second place suggested getting the SES light reset and driving the car to see if it comes back on. I'm just wondering what you guys would do? Has anyone else had this same issue? Also would you continue driving on the highway? (I drive about 100 miles each way on weekends)

Why wouldn't the trans shop hook up thier scanner and monitor the trans fluid temp sensor to make sure it is actually working? You could just have a bad tft sensor, but the fluid being dark and smelling burnt makes me wonder if it was overheated. When was the last trans service completed prior to having the shop pull the pan? And by "installing a fan" do you mean a trans cooler?

Re: 99 Grand Prix P1870 Transmission Component Slipping

I dont why they didnt hook up the scanner and monitor the temp. I had previously smelled the burned fluid and didnt realize that's what I was smelling. Honestly I got the car in 06 and the transmission hadnt been serviced after I bought it, but the dealer said they serviced it before I picked it up. And yes I mean a trans cooler ... In addition I did take the car back on the highway to see if I noticed any slipping. I got on and off the highway 3 different times and one of those times it seemed like it started slipping when I got up to about 70. Otherwise it's driving fine. But I think I'm gonna take it to another shop that offered to keep the car for a day and run every test that needs running to give me an exact idea of whats wrong with it.

With 208K don't waste your money with a new VB. the TCC is probably shot.
