Would like to find a car history. ideas?

I would like to find the history of a cadillac that my son just bought. How can i get the history of who owned this car and what states it has been registered in. Is there a vin # list or would the states keep old records of cars that had been registered. I was told state of Californa on keeps records for 3 years. Does any one know that to be true? Does cadillac company have a old recored department? Its there a company on the net that sells history recored of cars? Thanks Dave

Start here:
http://www.carfax.com/

Then try here:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/
They may be able to help you, because I am not sure about CA legislation. However, it is possible that the actual names and addresses of previous owners are not made available to protect their privacy.

Car fax will not search anything but 17 digit vins.

I ahd not thought that it might be a much older car. But that makes sense.
I wonder if the Cadillac/Lasalle club would help.
