231 flywheel
does anyone have information on where I can find a flywheel (manual trans) for an even fire 231? I'm converting an automatic to a standard and I think I need a 160 tooth flywheel.
Thx Rick |

Re: 231 flywheel
Any decent auto parts place should be able to get one for you. Flywheels are 'consumables' that is, they do wear out and need periodic replacement or resurfacing.
If they can only look things up by auto make and model, look for a clutch for a late 70's Buick Skyhawk with a 231. BTW, you do have a hole for a pilot bushing in the back of that crankshaft, right? Many GM engines intended for automatic tramsnissions do not always have this hole. |

Re: 231 flywheel
I've been to parts stores on line and off. The only results I get is a 168 tooth that also fits the 350 and I think a 154 was the other. I know the 350 flywheel won't fit because I have one that I've tried. The flange fits but the holes are slightly off. It does have a hole for a pilot bearing.

![]() I wonder if the automatic trans crankshaft simply has different bolt spacing from the manual. I am not sure. If you know for sure that a 350 flywheel will fit your manual transmission, you can take it to a machine shop. A good shop can move the holes....... they weld-up the existing hole, then re-drill it in the proper location. |

Thx. I'll try to do so in the future.

Re: 231 flywheel
Nothing that fits the Chevy will fit the Buick. Try contacting T/A Performance in Phoenix, AZ. They have LOTS of Buick performance parts no one else has.
Another "old car" source could be the late '70s Skyhawk, as many of them were 231s with a manual trans. FWIW Jim |
