Rare Kits?
Haven't made any models in quite a while now and was looking through teh cupboard. I was wondering if these models might be rare and maybe worth something. If anyone knows i would love to hear from you. Thanks.

Re: Rare Kits?
The most youll get is for the repsol ford. I believe the 1/12 porsche is not rare either. Check out ebay and see what they are selling for if you want to get an estiment on how much you can get for them.
If i was you i would not sell them but build them and post them here. |

Re: Rare Kits?
Well.. By not building you wont get better nor gain any skill at all.
If kits got a skill level, it mostly means you can advance in it, unless you are a talented person that does not need any practice to be the best

They have no value, they are not collectors items. Don't let Ebay convince you otherwise. You might find that one person that really wants your kit. You might find three such people. Or you might find that the last person who wanted one already got one- and no one will give you two pesos for yours....

Re: Rare Kits?
Quote:
The difference is that there is a worldwide established market and value for currency- particularly for those of nations that are well established, economically dominant, and stable. Coins and stamp have been collected worldwide for centuries/millennia. Collecting them has been doen for long enough and by enough people that value has been assigned to collectible pieces. This value may sometimes be obscure and/or arbitrary seeming, but it is widely recognized and accepted. Whether or not a particular collector sees personal value to a particular item, the market for it is well enough established that it really can be said to be 'worth something'. These items are not valuable because they are old or even rare- but because there is a well established and consistent market for them. Model kits on the other hand are only sought after by people who want a particular model kit. The market is fantastically small, fickle and obscure. Therefore while some kits may often trade between certain individuals for elevated amounts, it does not mean that these kits are worth these amounts. Just because someone was willing to pay that amount does not mean that everyone (or anyone else) would pay that amount. If you are a good salesman, you might be able to sell a collection of older kits, and be able to turn a profit on most of them. But that does not mean that the kits you are selling have any value- it means that you have skill (or luck). You could apply your luck equally well to selling used cars or real estate- or elephant sh!t. Model kits do not have any value, because a stable market for them is unestablished. Their appeal is so small and eclectic that such a market will never be established.

Re: Rare Kits?
To me, I think plastic model is not rare, only some demand. If those can't wait, they will bet on ebay, those who can wait, wait for it to re-issue and it will when the demand is so high.
To me, only small company resin kit is little more rare. Just my opinion... |

As long as people do collect them thy are collectibles no mater how much some would like this not to be the case. Sure not all model kits are collectibles, but then again not all coins or painting are collectibles either. |

Re: Rare Kits?
That is certainly true. But again, being rare does not make an item have value. That seems to be something that a number of people don't understand- or don't want to accept.

Re: Rare Kits?
I disagree with the idea that a scale model kit can't be a collected item.
I know many modelers (are they really modelers then...?! ) who collect items just to have them and won't probably never build/resell them.I also don't completely agree with the idea that the "rare" state of a model kit isn't what gives it its value, because if its "real" value (what it worth as what it is) can't change with its availability, you can't say that it doesn't have any impact on the asking/offering market prices. I'm also very upset when seeing guys trying to sell 10 times the price of a kit only by argueing it's rare, but it's a fact, as long as you'll see guys ready and accepting to pay a price more than its real value, you'll see some other ones trying to sell them the things concerned. That's precisely what we call speculation, isn't it ? And where I agree with some above opinions is here: no matter if it's rare or not, what would be its value if nobody wants it ??! the only solution to may people accept that price should be its real one, given by value and not by asking/offering market, is to make speculation forbidden ! If so, let's start by killing ebay !!!
