48K coil, 9mm Ford racing plug wires, Brass cap & rotor, advance timing to 14 BTDC. Stock Motorcraft plugs, gap@ .054. K&N filter replacement. Do whatever you want w/ the rest of the $1000. Tires & rims? Paint, stereo?

Re: f100 performance questions

thanx for the info. paint and bodywork is for next years' taxes. tires are a bit beefier than stock, and the rims are no-name(15" i think) aluminum. if the headers i buy have 3" collectors will it create too much restriction if the dual exhaust pipes are 2-1/4?

Re: f100 performance questions

This is what I would do in your situation.

1, Convert to an electronic ignition. If the stock distributor is in good shape, with no slop and with nice, working advance system, a conversion kit is very easy to install, like this one: http://www.vintageperformance.com/re...onversions.htm

Follow the instructions. The plugs will require a wider gap than stock, it may be best to get new ones. Also, follow the recommendations for the coil, wires etc. You can use the stock cap, rotor and coil if they are in good shape.

2. Do you have a 2-barrel carb and intake? If yes, get a 4 barrel carb and intake. The stock cast-iron Ford intakes restrict you to an Autolite carb or the 600 CFM Holley square-bore carbs. Other carbs will generally not work without a spacer, either because they are spread-bores or the throttle bores are too big.
But there are several good aftermarket aluminum intakes, which give better performance than stock and are more versatile. The dual-plane designs are better for near-stock engines. If you hate tuning carbs, an Edelbrock carb is fine. Holleys are great too, but often need a bit of tuning (usually leaning-out) to run fine. 650 cfm is ideal fir your engine, imo.

Note, changing intakes on the FE engines like yours requires you remove that valve covers and all the pushrods, too. It's no big deal, just a bit more work than usual.

3. Exhaust. Headers are great. 2 1/4 inch duals are plenty big enough. You would be fine even with 2 inch duals, too. 3 inch pipes would just be expensive and cumbersome, with no benefit.
I suggest to install a balance tube between the dual pipes, just aft of the transmission if you can. This increases toque a bit and control the sound better.

Imo thats about it for easy mods. The next step would be to get into cylinder head and camshaft swaps which gets expensive and complicated.

Good luck.
