Angry 99 Century Security Light

Been having trouble with my century not starting. Security light comes on occasionally while driving and or when trying to start. Took it to the dealer and said that when the lights coming on there are no codes being shown. They weren't able to duplicate the no start condition but it has happened 3 times since we got the car back Friday evening. Any suggestions? Was thinking about disconnecting the battery for 24 hours and seeing if that clears up the bug.

You should have the Passkey II VATS system. Meaning an ignition key with the resistor pellet. Try cleaning the contacts on both sides of the key with an eraser. Also, if you have a spare key try it. If that doesn't work then try a key relearn. Up to 10 minutes with key in ignition at ON and up to 30 minutes at OFF.

Re: 99 Century Security Light

At this point thats sounds as good as any, i have tried cleaning the resistor on both our keys with no success. For the system to relearn the key thats all i have to do is put it in the ignition and turn it to the run position without starting for 10 mins and then turn back to the off position for 30? do you think disconnecting the battery if that does not work will help any? It wouldnt start again last night while i was out away from home (10 degrees outside brrr). No security light at first then it came on. took 3 tries to get started drove for about 5 mins and the light came on but no problems after that. who knows what today will bring

Re: 99 Century Security Light

yes scott, you have that proceedure correct. I don't think disconnecting the battery will help, so try the relearn first. IF that doesn't work, then you will most likely need a new ignition key cylinder. There are two very thin wires that pick up the resistance of the pellet in the key that the security module uses to determine the correct key is in the ignition to allow start. If these wires are frayed or broken, you will get the intermitent security light you are experiencing. The other way to fix it is to do a bypass, where you get a resistor from an electronic store (like Radio Shack) that matches your key's pellet resistance and solder it in line to fool the security module. This of course defeats the security feature, but what are the chances someone is going to attempt to steal your car?

Re: 99 Century Security Light

Well I did the key relearn last Thursday evening and everything seems to be okay...Kinda... So far i have not had any issues with the car not starting but I am still getting the intermittent Security light coming on while driving. Any other suggestions guys?

What happened is you used your tilt a lot.

Those small wires frayed a bit now the security thing.

Like Richazz said.

Re: 99 Century Security Light

What i dont understand is why GM would put a stupid system in the car like that and it does not throw a code. If the car wont start and the light comes on there should be a code generated for the faulted condition. But nope. STILL having the same problem. Basically start replacing parts or buy another car... Fords look better each time i get in and the buick wont start. My 96 Mustang never has problems like this and i beat the crap out of that car
