Car for 17yo

Hey everyone, im 17 and lookin to buy a used car to play in until i get my signing bonus from the Air Force. I've been lookin at mid 90s Camaros. What would you all recommend? I dont want to spend more then like 3500$. Ive looked at mid 90s Camaros, Mustangs, and Eclipses. I want something like those. Fast n fun, Tuners are also good but it doesnt matter if its muscle or tuner.

If you want something that you can build up in the future I'd say the Camaro or a Trans Am. then when you get your bonus deal you can either build the car up or get something newer or whatever you were planing. Plus they sound nice

197 gto's are nice.. I'm just sayin'.. If you're after late model, the mustang is the way to go. Personally, i've never been a camaro fan. Mustang upgrades are readily available from body kits to superchargers to suspension upgrades because.. Let's face it.. The Mustang is the epitomy of American muscle! Long live the dang 'stang!

Check on your insurance rates first. You may find a big difference between models.

17 year olds usually pay big dollars for insurance on any car. This amount only gets higher for performance cars, even old ones.

So, if you can afford the insurance, an old Camaro, T/A or Mustang is the way to go. Imo shop around for the best deal (the best car for the money) and not any particular model.

If the insurance is too expensive, you have to get sneaky, imo, and find a fun performance vehicle that will not set-off alarms at the insurance company. Sometimes, you may be able to find an '80's RWD Cutlass, Monte Carlo,Grand Prix that has been modified by the previous owner. Another possibility is a Chevy S-10 pick up truck with a Chevy 350 conversion.

Yes Fast n fun for any teenager I fully understand, but the Insurance company's DON'T,,, What good is finding something within your budget if the insurance cost is same or double the cost of car ?

I dunno.. The kid's bound for the military. There are discounts for that. Anyone willing to defend MY freedom has the right to have whtever car he chooses! I say go for a Mazerati, son! Call me old at 30, but i found no greater joy than building my 67 GTO, and the crate Chevy 572 i planted in it will blow away any sports car in south Arkansas! 720 horses at the wheels with minor mods.. I'm unsure about the torque. Of course, i went with an auto 3speed aluminum racing tranny, so i could do much better with a manual, but i wanted driveability as well. If true American muscle is what you want, find a classic 60's or 70's muscle car and to hell with the insurance rates!

Insurance isnt really an issue because where I've already signed and I get good grades I get a discount on Mom and Dads insurance so its all the car. I want something that I can enjoy until I leave for basic and then keep around and work on and all while I am home. I enjoy workin on cars, so this one will be stayin around. I jus want to buy cheap then add money to it later when I can afford to swap engines and all. Thanks for the input however

So a Maro/Stang/Trans Am would be perfect, relatively easy to work on (so I've heard) come with pretty good motors stock, they handle decent, and they look pretty good.
