93 tbird 5.0ho stall and other issues
Here's my main issue: my 93 tbird lx 5.0ho seems to start and idle fine for the first 30 seconds or so, then the idle drops about 200-300rpm but continues to idle, then stalls badly and sometimes dies when the accelerator is pressed whether driving or sitting parked. I first noticed oil in the throttle body, so i cleaned it thoroughly and that solved the problem for about a week, then i replaced the pcv valve, crank filter, and hoses and cleaned the intake and throttle body again. Problem solved for about 3 hours. Now its starting again, but this time when i rev it to 5000rpm's after stalling, i hear a bad rattle on the right side and there's an awful smell like a bad catalytic converter. I'm thinking stuck/bent valve/lifter. Obviously all the sensors are fine and it has a new fuel pump/filter, and the engine was rebuilt appx. 3 years ago. When i had the intake off, i noticed alot of oily sludge inside the intake manifold from the blow-by (excessive crankcase pressure = why i replaced the pcv valve & hoses), and the crank filter was completely clogged with what remarkably resembled oily dirt. I guess what i'm asking is.. Does this sound like something major, or should i just give it a good cleaning?

Re: 93 tbird 5.0ho stall and other issues
I'm not proud. I'll give it a shot..... The hose going into the air cleaner "filter" isn't a vent for the crankcase. It is to handle the blowby from the crankcase that the PCV valve can't handle.. Can you re-route the PCV valve overload to an external source, not running it back through the air filter. I had the same problem on my Escort. I took the hose from the PCV valve to the air cleaner intake loose and routed it away from the engine. Seems the PCV valve couldn't handle the crankcase blowby and the excess was fouling up my air cleaner, MAF and the throttle body. Haven't had any problems since. They can be a money pit all right.

Re: 93 tbird 5.0ho stall and other issues
How many miles are on the engine and is it burning oil? It sounds like the piston rings are shot. Remove all of the spark plugs, do a compression test and record the numbers. Then squirt some oil into each cylinder, spin the engine over a few times and then do another compression test. If the numbers go up then you know the rings aren't sealing well. It's best to do this on a warm engine but to avoid getting burned you can get a rough idea on a cool engine. Revving an engine up that high without a load on it is asking for trouble!

If the numbers don't come up youi have bad valves.

Re: 93 tbird 5.0ho stall and other issues
it just sounds like a whole lot of back pressure. Does cat converter smell, smell like rotten eggs, if so it may be time to replace it or just cut it out and weld in some straight pipe; this would give you more power and better fuel economy.
