Unhappy blower still not blowing

98 grand cherokee: replaced blower motor and resistor, swapped out control pnl. have voltage on motor, but it will not blow unless hotwired. I assume a grounding issue but without good schematics dont know where to look. Also missing the backlighting on the control panel. I have checked all the fuses, etc. I don't wont to rigg it. If anyone knows something please chime in.

Re: blower still not blowing

manual. i dont know if it helps, but even with the key out of the ignition when I tried a hard ground on the blower motor leads it spun up. I have worked in some form of electronics since 1996 but without any kind of schematic I really dont know where to start with it. Haynes robbed me on this particular model. Got one for a 93 mustang with good schematics but they suck for the jeep... I am thinking I have just enough ground to read the voltage at the motor, but not enough to carry any current when switched. i dont know.

Re: blower still not blowing

Update:

I thought about it and am inclined to replace the ignition switch. I am under the impression that the control panel is switching ground instead of 12vdc. However, last time I tinkered with it I remember having 12 volts on both leads and when I finally figured out which wire was supposed to be ground and hard grounded it the motor jumped to life with the key not in the ignition. This was a month or so ago and I cant remember all the details but my brain cells were trying to fire up the other night and at the time it made sense that my ignition switch with 356000 miles on it may need replacing. I will let you know how it goes. (I have replaced my stangs switch several times with half the logged mileage due to contacts breaking off and power either not being routed, or being routed to the wrong place at the wrong time.)

Re: blower still not blowing

Update.

Found what was surely the ground to the control panel and it was measuring @5Mohms. Poured back through the Haynes and finally found a diagram under the '96. None of the other yrs included it but it was the same deal. Verified that the Dark green was indeed supposed to be a ground and half tapped a new 14awg wire, running it to the frame. Problem solved. Thar she blows! Lesson learned: so far 100% of my jeep electrical problems have been a ground issue. Hope everyone enjoys their Easter weekend.
