2002 traction control problem

I have a 2002 silverado 1500 LT. 5.3L w/automatic. Bought it used and found it had Traction Control, nothing I have ever dealt with on any of my previous Silverado's. ( 89, 97, 2000, 2003HD2500 ) When I got it, had to immediately yank the intake and take care of the knock sensors and clear the codes. Made a 350 mile trip with no problems then today, went to pull off from my driveway, not gassing it or burning out, and had zero throttle response. Tach read 600 rpm and I idled up to 10mph, no more. At the same time, the (LOW TRACTION) light came on above the traction control button. I limped into the next drive, shut the truck off and restarted and it has not happened again.

Engine has 226K miles on it, but runs like a dream, no skips, plenty of power. Anyone know what might have cause the traction contol hiccup and advise me if I can safely bypass this feature (pulling a fuse maybe) and if that can be done safely without affecting driveability or presenting computer issues?

Re: 2002 traction control problem

This has happened twice more in the past two days. Always from a stop and turning the truck off and on clears it up for a bit. Really looking for someone with more knowledge to shed some light on this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 2002 traction control problem

Easiest place to start is to get the codes scanned. It may not be anything at all to do with the traction control or it could be. Get the codes scanned and post them here and someone should be able to point you in the right direction. The reason I said that it may have nothing to do with the traction control is that my Avalanche threw a code a few weeks back telling me that I needed to have the traction control system and the stabiltrac system serviced. When my mechanic scanned the codes it was the steering wheel position sensor that had thrown the code and nothing to do technically with the traction control.

Re: 2002 traction control problem

No codes when taken to AutoZone. The only code I had was a Bank2 Knock Sensor and had both replaced. Cleared it then and none have been set since.

No SES light associated with this. Just, the <low traction> light comes on and zero throttle response. And I am not spinning the wheels or on sand or gravel. First time was a concrete driveway. Second and third were WalMart parking lot.

If your oem specific code reader found no drive train DTC'S I wouldn't worry too much...can't be a major issue...

auto zone normally has only the engine dtc's...
