What kind of differential?

I tried to search this but all I could find was drum to disc brake conversions, and not what a 94 Caprice normally came with.

I had a blow out on my rear left tire the other day, and bought a single replacement tire, which will arrive sometime next week. I literally couldn't afford a second tire, just didn't have the money cause the stupid rims on it require tires that cost 150 each.

I was told to put it in the front, and put the front tires in the rear to not burn up the differential.

But I thought the 94 caprices had an open differential, which means the rear left tire is just "limp" like the fronts, does nothing..

I can't find anything about them..

I did a lookup on my car and this is the options it had..

Incase you didn't notice in my signature that the rims are custom, the rims that came with the car when i bought it take 255 50 17

Your specs say 15 x 7

17" tires are more $$ for sure.
The price you pay for hi performance.

As long as they are the same size, I don't see how they would hurt the Diff.

Those specs are what the car left with from the factory.

The differential is the same, it was never changed, but I need to know what kind of differential I have..

New tire, different BRAND, same size, no wear vs 3 other tires of different brand with wear. I forsee a differential that's gonna go through hell.. I could put the new tire up front, but then i see it messing with the steering.

Specs say 2.73 gears with no mention of a posi unit so it is probably an open diff as opposed to a posi.
To confirm, you could jack up the rear of the car and turn the wheels. If both turn in the same direction, you have a posi, if not, it is an open diff.

this vehicle if stock diff has an open or LIMITED SLIP DIFF..
to check this out jack up one rear wheel if limited slip it should be hard to rotate hence the limited not locking diff...slippage does occur with these limited slip diff's supplied to some of these vehicles...

most have the open diff unless when built it was ordered with this option which should be listed in the glove box...

also on the rear axle housing passengerside facing front there should be letters/numbers identifing this axle..


upon looking at your list of as built equiptment you have the 2.73 ratio diff..this is not limited slip...this is a very reliable open diff used for decades by GM..

however I would put the new tire on the rt frt of vehicle...

I also noticed how they installed the fe1 springs now that is a very poor spring ! did you ever change the springs ?

I got bf goodrich 255 50 z17 tires from costco for about 120 installed..these only last 35,ooomi very soft rubber ..

never touched the springs.. don't know if any previous owner did though..
