check engine light on- needs new cats

Okay 95 crown vic. i had here tested to see why the CEL was on. it said p1404 i think(auxiliary manufactory emmisions control) if im not wrong i think it means i need a new catylatic converter. so yea ive been researching the cats and there expensive so then i find these cheaper after market cats. My question is are the aftermarket cats worth the money and will they get the job done?? there are alot cheaper than the real deal so i am considering purchasing one...

Focus on the codes 1st, it looks like a problem with the EGR system.

Ford's service manual does not show a P1404. Are you sure that is the code? The following are all the low 1400 codes in the manual. I agree with danielsatur. They all lead to the EGR system. But it is not necessarily the EGR valve. Need exact code.
P1400
P1401
P1403
P1405
P1406
P1407
P1408
P1409
