2000 chevy 1500 gears grinding but not tranny

i have a 2000 chevy silverado just had the tranny rebuilt and now that there is snow i was testing out the 4wd.When its in 4wd it sounds like some gears are gringing.And when you let off the gas there seams to be a bind in the front end that the truck slows down very fast without hitting the breaks.Just woundering if its the transfer case or the front diff that may be bad if anyone can help that would be great thank you.

have you checked these fluids..what is the fluid condition/color front diff / transfercase..?

Did you change Gear Ratios in front or rear diffs? I heard of a person who changed ring & pinion in just the rear & had the same problem. R & P must be changed to the same ratio in both ends so they are the same!

my truck has 212,000 miles on it last year everything was good.I talked to the guy that rebuilt my tranny.He said he did not change any gear ratios.I drained both transfercase and front diff.Changed both of them still makes grinding noise and when you let off of the gas in 4wd it almost stops by itself.

Is it a floor shifter for Transfer Case? If so, I suggest checking the linkage for proper adjustment.

yes its on the floor i was just talking to my tranny guy and that is what he said also but how do you do that never messed with one before and thank you all for the help

what did the fluids look like ? metal shavings?

It's not easy, a lot of trial & error. But it is easier if you have someone to help. Have him in the cab shifting while you're under. I can't really explain how to know when you have it properly adjusted. On my '76 Blazer, I could just "feel" when it was right as I shifted into 4WD.

i just talked to somone he said if the tires ar not the same tread then it will do it does that make any sence.There was no metel shavings in eather of them.

the front tires need be the same size same tire and same wear..
when you do not rotate tires or replace one tire when the other tires are worn more than 50% THIS PUTS STRESS ON THE 4WD DRIVE TRAIN.

the front axles are always locked in any 4wd position, so these need be the same size..in the rear you can get away with a greater difference..in wear...is that what you have the front tires are different in wear ?

Yes it does. If any of the tires are a different diameter, you could destroy the Trans. Case! Even different tread from the same brand of tire could cause big problems.

They could be i got 2 used tires and put them on the back.3 out of the 4 ball joints were bad in the front so i changed all of them.The tires in the front have different wear on them beacuse the front was so bad but have not changed the tires yet.

I bet that is it. If it were me, I'd leave it parked until I had 4 new matching tires! A lot cheaper than Trans. Case rebuild!

its my only winter truck i have do you think it will hurt to drive just in 2wd for now

No, it can't hurt anything if both of the rear tires are the same brand & size.
