2000 Alero 3.4 SES code 0440

I have replaced the gas cap as a quick/easy/cheap check on diagnosing my code 0440. The SES light is still on. I have only driven the car approx 15 miles, should it take longer than that to reset the light if the cap was malfunctioning?

I looked under the car today and found my fuel filter and I think the charcoal canister (rectangle large hose in, little hose out to metal line to front of car) no cracks and connected properly, and the sensor, (black with alot of wires mabey 2 or 3 plugs). Should I just replace both these things or is there a test I can perform to check them. I haven't gotten a Haynes/Chilton manual yet, are these tests covered in there?

Thanks for your help in diagnosing my car.
Kyle

yes it can take awhile for the SES light to go out after you've replaced the gas cap (asuming that was the problem). You could go to an Autozone or AdvanceAuto store; they usually will let you borrow their code reader (or use it themselves) to read and clear the codes right there in the parking lot....that will turn the light off immediately, and you can wait and see if it comes back on...
hope this helps

Question Re: 2000 Alero 3.4 SES code 0440

I was going to do that in a couple of days if the ses light didn't reset by itself.

Does anybody know the tests for checking the sensors of that system?

How about the charcoal cannister?

Thanks, Kyle

SES light still on after +/- 80 miles and many cycles of on and off. Spoke with a mechanic friend on mine and he said "to the stealership with you" so its off to the GM shop for the repair.
