1986 Suburban..aftermarket wheels hitting tierods?

So I bought new tires and rims for my '96, and wanted to put the old ones on my 1986 Suburban. They mount up, and even go over the hub. The problem is the stupid tie rods hit the back of the wheel. The local tire shop said this is a common problem on these old rigs, and gave me some 1/4" spacers and special lug nuts to use. One 1/4" spacer isn't enough. Even two spacers put together (would never drive it like this), isn't quite enough to keep the wheel from hitting the tie rod. Is there a way around this? Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a new tie rod or something that will fix the issue, or is 1" spacers the only answer here? Really want to get them on, they look sweet on there. If it comes down to it I guess ill sell them and leave the old ugly ones on. Let me know if you know anything about it.
