Back brakes lock up, what gives?

Just got my boy a 1998 Cavalier for his Christmass gift this year. He loves it to say the least. But the darn wheels on the back tend to grab to tight when the brakes are applied.

Took it to the shop to have it looked at, and the guy there told me that this is common with thiese cavaliers, so he changed some rusty parts that were on it, but it still does it.

Everything is like new on it, so if anyone on this board has had this problem with the brakes giving them a hard time, please clue me in.

Re: Back brakes lock up, what gives?

lots of brake dust can make them apply too hard, but he probably cleaned them out when he replaced the parts.

If the parking brake sticks on slightly, then the regular brakes apply too much.

It could also be the fronts not applying enough

Re: Back brakes lock up, what gives?

mine did the exact same thing, i took it to the dealer and they apparently just cleaned the brakes and the problem went away, i sold the car a week later so i dont know if it stayed fixed but it might be something to try

Re: Back brakes lock up, what gives?

Definitely check the parking brake and make sure it isn't applying slightly. The brakes need to be adjusted so they BARELY contact the drum. With the wheel off the ground and tire on spin it and you should hear it lightly contact. If they are adjusted too tight they lock up REALLY easy.
