Fuel Filter Choice - OEM or Aftermarket?

Should I go with the OEM or look to an aftermarket one? If aftermarket then what brand is suggested?

You should change that thing once a year. Try doing it every spring or something so it becomes habit.
I have no opinion on brands, I use fram or whatever else Wally world sells this month. I'd never spend extra $$$ getting one from a dealer.

Re: Fuel Filter Choice - OEM or Aftermarket?

FWIW You don't have to go to the dealer to buy an A C Delco fuel filter. Some parts stores carry that line as well as online less than a dealer. For example, Rock Auto.com shows 3 brands of filters for Olds Silhouettes. A Wix brand part # 33183 for $9.94, a FRAM part # G7740 for $12.45, and an A C Delco part # GF819 for $13.78. The Delco is roughly $1.30 more than the FRAM which isn't much if you want to go with the OEM. (They are all decent brand filters and should work with your vehicle.)

Re: Fuel Filter Choice - OEM or Aftermarket?

I ended up going with the NAPA brand. Here in Canada it was $17.00. I figured that was an OK price.

I was also in a rush to get some maintenance done as I was driving to Orlando. Combined with new rear shocks, a oil/filter change, cabin filter change and replacing the thermostat, it was a great ride. Turns out that my thermostat was faulty and wasn't letting the engine get to temperature. It still doesn't get to the middle of the temp. gauge though, about 3/8. I figured I got 26 mpg (US), that converts to 31 mpg (UK). Not too bad for a 10 year old van with 190,000 km on it, loaded with kids/luggage, trecking through the mountains of PA, VI and WV on I77 at 65/70 mph.

Also, do I really need to change the fuel filter every year as recommended by merc81?

Yes you really do need to change the fuel filter at least once a year OR every 15,000 miles. I change mine twice a year...every spring and fall. I too use NAPA Gold filters. Changing your fuel filter is just as important as any other maintenance to a vehicle.

A partially blocked fuel filter will cause the fuel pump to wear prematurely.

Yearly replacing is just a preventive maintenance project.

It's secured to the (inside) frame on the passenger side just ahead of the tank.

The fuel pump and fuel level sender is in the tank.
