Should I let it die?

Bought my first car when I was 15. Paid $500 for a 1985 Monte Carlo. Loved it while it worked, but its been years since then and I've moved on. I'm now 22 and the Monte Carlo has just been sitting in my driveway for well over 2 years, maybe 3(I live in Cincinnati, so the weather comes into play as well as time). Engine was completely messed up last I got it checked. Who knows whats wrong with it now.

I know absolutely nothing about cars, but I go to school for mechanical engineering and have become interested in working with them. Should I just let this car go and find another that would be easier to fix up myself or can I still salvage this.

I know its hard to tell without actually seeing the car, but any advice would be great.
