OBD1.5 Questions

First off I can't think of why a OBD 1.5 Connector was a good idea

My car 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 3.1 V6 2 Door

More or less at the end of the road trying to stop the Check Engine Soon Light from coming on.

Replaced the O2 Sensor, disconnected the battery, drove for about an hour then light comes back on. Oddly enough sometimes it wont, and other times it comes on right away.

The paper clip trick doesn't work. Tried it so many times and different ways. (wish I had a 93)

Took it in once to get it scanned, they told me the car has to be running with the Check Engine Soon Light On. Apparently the code goes away after the engine is shut off?

Really want to keep this car, anyone know a way of checking the codes without a scanner? Or a scanner that I could buy for OBD 1.5 that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Sorry for the rant.

Re: OBD1.5 Questions

Why blame obd1.5 for improper repairs or diagnostics. What was the code, an o2 code doesn't mean it needs to be replaced, other things can cause this. It will go off if the problem is corrected usually after 10 drive cycles for most codes, cleared with the scanner. Actron makes reasonable scanner, check their website.

The mechanic that replaced the O2 Sensor never told me the code, but showed the O2 Sensor and it was in really bad shape. The end was covered with crud, doubt it could of got a reading at all.

I've driven it about 5 or 6 times since I got it fixed. I never knew about about the code staying until you drive it so many times. Would leaving the battery cable off for a longer period of time help it go away quicker?

I appreciate all your help.

Re: OBD1.5 Questions

The appearance of an o2 sensor does not tell the story, a scan watching it's activity will. Some codes will not necessarily clear with the battery disconnect. See if it goes off after another 5 drive cycles, if not I'd go back to your guy, and get the code and post it back if the problem persists

Re: OBD1.5 Questions

I have a 95 Buick that has the 1.5 and I had problems about a year ago. Someone on the loop here told me about a scanner that Actron makes CP9190 it will read the 1.5 on my Buick probably will on the olds as well. It does come with a cigarette adapter plug that you must use to get power for the 1.5 but if you have newer version you don't have to use this cord. I ordered mine direct from Actron. There is a website etooldirect.com that has many auto tools and I believe this scanner is there. this one gives you codes but you can have it running and get other data as well. Wasn't that expensive either, considering that price of tools.
