Head gasket or intake gasket?

I am trying to determine which gasket has failed on my 2002 Montana. The exhaust is full of white smoke and the cooling system is nothing but hot air. There does not appear to be any coolant in the oil or any new obvious leaks. The day things went bad I replaced a small coolant hose and added a gallon of Dexcool. That same night the van overheated and I have had this problem ever since. How can I tell if my problem is the head gasket or the intake gasket?

Re: Head gasket or intake gasket?

Can you see coolant leakage on the Intake gasket during a coolant pressure test?

Re: Head gasket or intake gasket?

I saw a very small leak a few weeks ago and was planing to fix it next month. Now I can't find any leak or tell where to coolant is going.

I don't like to chase coolant leaks, use Metallic block seal 1st.

You saw a coolant leak a few weeks ago and planned to fix it next month. Uh-huh.

The exhaust is full of white smoke (blown head gasket) and the cooling system is nothing but hot air (like politicians, but I'm going to say a blown intake manifold gasket).

My bet is your engine is running on a prayer.

Forget the Block seal... Its of no use at this point...

roadrunner I completely agree with you... First you had an intake gasket leak, then you ran it hot, and must have done so a few times... If this is true the heads are warped and the head gaskets are burnt... Only cure for this issue is to yank the heads, have then reworked and straightened... And reinstall new gaskets and head bolts, meanwhile make sure you upgrade to the aluminum intake gaskets.. and thats if the damage has not already been done to the bottom end of the motor..

Best of Luck..
