NOT the shifter solenoid - what else could it be??

We replaced the shifter control in the 2003 Grand Am 3.1 litre. It wasn't that, so its still locking so you can't get the key out. Could it be some kind of brake sensor??

Re: NOT the shifter solenoid - what else could it be??

Did you mean to post this on the Grand Am forum? I have seen similar problems on both of my Grand Prix's. Do you have a floor shifter? How did you confirm it was not the shifter solenoid (also called BITSI)? There is a second solenoid on the steering column (assuming it is like the Grand Prix). If the key is still stuck, you can remove the small round plug on the bottom side of the plastic cover on teh sterring column. Then insert a small screw driver strigth up in the hole and push the manual release on the solenoid. This will let the key out.

If you know that the BITSI solenoid (shifter) is good. You should probably need to remove the plastic cover on the steering column and verify that with the key stuck in the ignition (in the off position) and the shifter in park, you should have at least 11 volts applied to the solenoid on the steering column.

There are several write-ups by many much more experienced than I on the Grand Prix forums. Just search key stuck in ignition or BITSI.

Hope this helps.

who told you to replace that? there is key interlock solenoid under the steering column, don't have to replace that just take it out completely... and problem will be solved. If you don't trust me then go ahead and spend some more money on other things. Happy Holidays

You can remove the interlock solenoid on the steering column. But be aware that when you do that you can remove the key from the ignition while the car is still in gear. It is entirely your choice. I know several folks that operate their cars like this.

Are you sure you are referring to a Grand Prix? If so I'll move this back to the right forum. It was moved to the Grand Am forum with a redirect due to the make and model listed in the OP's Post #1.

The thread has been moved to the Pontiac Grand Prix forum.

Assuming the shifter assembly was replaced other causes could be the key release solenoid at the steering column or even a bad key cylinder. Also, try doing a search of our old threads which covers your issue in detail.

Re: NOT the shifter solenoid - what else could it be??

Refir to my post here on this issue...

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=907156

Mine would get stuck at the most inconvenient times, before work, before a wedding....

My issues turned out to be the solonoid itself in the steering column. It was only working every other time. I still have not replaced it! but shhhhhh. One day I will.

Re: NOT the shifter solenoid - what else could it be??

TBlake's post is a good reference. It is how I diagnosed my problem to be the BTSI (thanks Tim ). You indicate that it is not the shift solenoid but how did you determine this? Did you replace the shifter? It is not a serviceable item.

Several other folks have reported that they found wires pulled out of the harness/connectors. The wires are very short and can be under strain.

But the best thing to do is follow a plan to diagnose the problem.

1) With the key "stuck" (unable to remove from the ignition switch) and the car in Park: check the voltage at the black/white wire on steering column solenoid. If it has at least 10 volts on it and you cannot remove the key, then the steering solenoid is bad. If it does not have voltage, then problem is elsewhere. Start checking the wiring harnesses and connectors.

If you use the wiring diagram in TBlake's reference.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=907156

you can check for voltage at each connector to see where the problem is.

If you go all the way through the diagram and find no voltage it is in the shifter solenoid (park position switch in the diagram).
