99 timing belt

friend has a 99 escort 4 banger, NOT zx2, sohc engine. Went and cranked to see what was wrong with it, no valve action. The question of the day is this an interference engine?

I'm 90% certain it is NOT an interference engine.

Re: 99 timing belt

His now wife was driving, so who knows if there were any bangs like bending valves or anything. I Know it cranks over now like there isn't even a head on it, like ZERO compression. Cranks like you have all the plugs out of it. I pulled the top bolts from the t belt cover and made sure it was turning and it was, but must have loosened the sprocket on the camshaft or something, there is no mistaking that kind of cranking. I just told him I don't have time for that crap right now on someone else's car. Told him if it needed head repair he was looking at a grand or so for someone to do it for him. In short, he needs to part it out and scrap it, its not worth repairing. Car looks like its been driven through the baja 1000, banged up and looks like crap, it is not worth 1000 repair.

Re: 99 timing belt

It probably does have ZERO compression since there would be an open valve in just about every cylinder. Either intake or exhaust. Maybe you should tell him it's not worth fixing. That is your expert opinion and he is more than welcome to get a second opinion
