replaced cps, still no start!! help!

i have a 99 jeep cherokee, i recently had the check engine light come on. I checked with my odb2 tester and found it was my crankshaft postion sensor. I've relplaced it but still have the same problems. Once maybe twice a week it will not start. If i go under the hood and unplug the sensor and plug it back in it usally starts. Now this trick is not working as often, ive retested the new sensor with a multimeter, and is fine........anybody have any ideas!! anythink will help.

There have been several reports of getting a bad CPS right out of the box. Do you have any other codes?

yes, i also had a camshaft position code. I bought a used distributor, and put it on to solve the problem, but the Codes for both are still showing up.

Well an electronics guy should show up soon to have a look; but you may want to check the wiring harness for any worn insulation. I've seen a few posts where the insulation near the computer was worn and caused odd issues.

Were you getting the crank sensor code before?

Problems with the CPS connector are quite common. Best bet is to cut it off and solder slices directly onto both sides of the harness. You can "google" around to find lot's of posts on this subject.

Also make sure the harness didn't hit the exhaust manifold and burn through.

i would check the crank signal with a scanner and see if your live data screen loooses info, display. then make sure no connectors are backing out of the harness when you plug it in.

Re: replaced cps, still no start!! help!

You might want to check around the back of the head. There has been some issues of the harness shorting on the very back left side of the head. I would check that before I hard wired the sensor.
