93 Regal: Engine won't shut off, ignition switch turns freely
I have a 93 Regal Custom. The engine was running but when I turned the ignition switch to the off position and removed the key the engine was still running. Was only able to shut off vehicle by disconnecting the battery. I thought it may be the ignition lock but have also read it could be a arm/rack mechanism that could be broken. When turning the ignition switch it no longer feels like it's catching like it had done before when going through the accessory/off/on positions. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 93 Regal: Engine won't shut off, ignition switch turns freely
You are correct. Inside the column, when the lock cylinder rotates, it is actually moving this sliding switch up and down, like a tiny rack-and-pinion gear. In your case, it sounds like something mechanical has broken or is worn out.
Given the age of the car, it may be cheapest and easiest to locate another steering column from a wrecking yard. Any decent wrecking yard can advise you on what models and years of GM cars are interchangable with yours. |

Thanks for the reply. Do they offer a repair kit for the broken arm or gear? I haven't completely torn into the column just yet but I am pretty positive that this is what broke. Thanks.

Re: 93 Regal: Engine won't shut off, ignition switch turns freely
I have never heard of one. Usually this problem does not occur often enough to require a kit.
If you are lucky, you may be able to fix it by replacing the lock cylinder only, but of course, it depends on where the damage is. Replacement cylinders are available through the dealer or a locksmith. |

Good point. Theft damage is by far the leading cause of GM column repair requirements.

Re: 93 Regal: Engine won't shut off, ignition switch turns freely
Thanks for all the help. I did get it taken apart earlier today and the rack part is broken. I might just check out the cost of a good column from a salvage yard as the blinker switch needs replaced and the horn doesn't work. Thanks again for the help.
