Pontiac 400 Starter

I just dropped a 1977 y4 400 into my 66 pontiac lemans. I used the flywheel and starter from the stock 326 on the 400. I noticed that the flywheel is rubbing on that half cupling around the starter gear. Is the mount for the starter on this block higher than that of the 326 or are the starters different? I was under the impression that the starter much like a lot of the other parts would be interchangable. Looking for your assistance MrPbody !!

Re: Pontiac 400 Starter

They are all supposed to be "the same". There are some subtle differences, but the ring gear diameter and starter mounting are the same.

There are shims to be inserted between the starter and the block, that can relieve the problem. They're the same shims a Chevy uses, available at Advance, AZ, etc.
