I have a problem with my '02 windstar. The van was squeeking while warming up, then will intermittantly squeek, especially decelerating, then the engine cuts off. I had the serpentine belt replaced and could still hear the squeek at the shop, they used a listening device and told me the offender was the water pump. As I was driving to another shop to get the pump looked at, I decelerated and the squeek happened again, and again the car cut off. Is the water pump pully locking up causing this? Has anyone experienced this?
UPDATE- the mechanic told me it wasn't the water pump, but a "cam sink"??? He said it was fairly common on Fords. Anyone have any info on this? I've never heard this term before. Last edited by dkc_2001; 12-15-2009 at 08:22 AM. |

I think he meant the cam shaft makes noise becausee of the friction. You may need to replace the shaft to get rid of the sound. Your mechanic is crap. He should know from the 1st time the cause of the sound. When belt was removed, if sound persists, then it's definitively in the engine, not accessory drive.

Re: Serpentine belt squeek, car cuts off
Search for "camshaft sensor" and "camshaft synchronizer".
You may get by with a few drops of fresh oil on the synchronizer. The camshaft position sensor has to be removed first. Easier written than done. |

Re: Serpentine belt squeek, car cuts off
The first mechanic was Merchan'ts, just had the belt replaced. I knew I needed to take it to someone a little more knowlegeable for the correct diagnosis. Had the cam shaft replaced as you said. No more sound, $250 later.
Thanks! |
