Get the code read and report back. When the CEL comes on, it stores the fault code in memory so that it gives the person with a scanner information on what error code caused the light to come on.
Just don't assume you can replace the part that the error code references. You must still troubleshoot the system to find out what the root cause is. For example, many an oxygen sensor has been needlessly replaced for an "O2 sensor out of range" error code. Many times, this is just a vacuum leak that caused the code, replacing the O2 sensor did nothing to fix the vacuum leak... Since your car is totally cutting out, I suspect that you are losing fuel delivery or spark. The CEL code should point you in the right direction.
