I just bought this car and would like to know if the floor console should be lit up to see what gear you're in.

If there are letters and numbers on the council than yes. The bulb is serviceable and I believe it is a 194

The transmission selector DOES NOT illuminate on the '04-'07 Malibus. Cost-cutting.

I've just checked my 04 Malibu and the transmission selector indicator lights are only on when the headlights are on. Makes sense to me. Maybe that's why some are reporting that they are not on. Turn your headlights on and look again though it's difficult to see in bright daylight. At night they are bright and clear.
