Welcome to AF.
More info needed here. What year and what engien? Is it a standard or auto transmission. If std traqnsmission clutch could be slipping if engine speeds up in gear and and no go. Post back more info for more help.

...thanks! i'll post more info later; in the meantime here's what i do know off the back of my head: 1997 S-10 V6 4.3 2WD AT ...I'm able to drive it around the block but really at a slow pace and a high-sounding/revving sound and of course my original concern - no reverse.

This sounds like a sunshell failure, no reverse and only gears 1 and 3 work. If its starts off normally, but when it shifts if it revs up a lot and shifts up to next gear and thats it and no reverse, its the sunshell.
