need advice for 03' 4.7l

i have a 03' 1500 qc that is our daily driver, the engine locked up going down the road one afternoon. I towed it to where i worked and pulled the oil pan and found that part of the timing chain follower had broke and was lying in the pan. i assume that it plugged the oil pickup and starved it for oil, because it spun 2 mains and welded the bearings to #3 and 4 rods and scored the crank. I have looked into rebuild but it is 1800 for parts not including machining work for me to do it myself, junkyards.. if they have em are 1200-1800 and a reman is 2200-3000 dollars. im torn on what i should do. is this a common prob for this engine? could i go to a 5.7 hemi swap which is easier to find? just trying to weigh my options

The parts are expensive for this engine and most are dealer part only. The crank is no good if it is heavilly scored and count the teeth on the reluctor ring. That is the big differance of the 4.7 crankshafts, number of teeth of the reluctor ring.

it has the 32 tooth tone ring, i agree about the parts for the engine, nothing for this engine is cheap which sucks, you cant buy camshafts for this thing not even from dodge, you have to buy a new or reman head. and the machine shops i spoke with wont even turn that crank i would have to buy a new one of those as well which is why it takes a diy rebuild up to the 1800 dollar range including all the other parts.

Re: need advice for 03' 4.7l

here goes....i found a 5.7 hemi with harness and computer for 1200 pulled out of a 03' truck that was totaled because it was t-boned. now this is an enticing deal! it has only 65k on it. just wondering if anyone has done such a swap from a 4.7 to the 5.7. i have scoured the net and cant seem to find anywhere that it can be done. i would love to jump on this if it is possible. now my other question is, would my transmission work if i can do this? this particular engine find the trans is gone already. there is nothing wrong with the trans in my truck.
