What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
What's the bolt torque on the plastic intake manifolds for the 4.6 L 1996 and newer?

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
Hi Mike, I think this is it, but not sure..
Intake and side plates assembly to cylinder head --Step 1 15-22 ft/lbs --Step 2 Tighten additional 90 degrees Intake manifold to cylinder head bolts SOHC (two valve GT and bullitt) 15-22 ft/lbs DOHC (four valve Cobra and Mach One) Upper plenum to intake 71-106 in/lbs Intake to lower side plates 71-106 in/lbs --Step 1 15 ft/lbs --Step 2 Tighten additional 90 degrees

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
I've had a bunch of trouble with these leaky intake manifolds here lately. The plastic 96 one has been replaced with after market, and is of poor quality in my opinion. It was warped and had to run my jitter bug sander down each side to flatten it out. Auto parts store kept saying that the old style gaskets were the correct ones. They wanted to sell me the whole manifold for 250. Ended up finding the correct set yesterday at the next place I tried. I needed the individual round ones, not that plastic strip for the aluminum manifolds. Well 15 to 22 ft lbs sounds right, but don't know if I like the additional 90 degrees. What's up with that ? I just hate to over torque something like this.

Probably for high performance. Not sure though Mike,. Call up Advance Auto Parts, and ask them to check the specs chart. They can tell you.

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
I am going to go with 22 ft pounds of torque. Any one got a picture of the bolt torque sequence?
Got the wrong old style gaskets at first, Advance auto. They were dumb founded as what gasket to use. Wanted to sell me a new intake manifold for 250. Went down the street to O Reilly's to get them ordered. Advance auto parts is clueless on this one. Http://cmasalvage.com/4.6l_gaskets1996.jpg Http://cmasalvage.com96cv_imr5.JPG

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
22 pounds is way to much torque. The last bolt snapped off in the head at 22 ft pounds. I had to take the intake back off and remove the broken fastener. Was just enough bolt sticking out to grab with vise grips. I went about 19 ft pounds the second time around.

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
Steven, I noticed in your 3rd pic, that you have exactly 1 penny and 1 dime. A total of .11 cents. May I borrow .11 cents from you? lol Nice pics of your engine. I did my intake a yeara and a half ago. Not to bad once I go the EGR valve off. (Solid Aluminum Intake)... Good to see you back at the Forum!!! I think we should have National Steven Day here at the Forum.
I'll bring the beer!!!!!! Mike can bring the food And MacGiver can bring the bad jokes. Quote:

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
I did the intake swap 3 times now and each time I torqued to 22 lb-ft. without problems. I do inspect the bolts before reinstalling though and noticed that some were stretched out and weakened for some reason. I replaced with some from the hardware store and works great.

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
I have a secrete recipe for a mean barbecue sauce. Not for little girls or wimps, lol.
I'm fairly sure I am dealing with an after market manifold on this car. It says made in USA but no Ford part numbers. According to maintenance records on the car from the previous owner, the manifold was replaced in 2004 Due to being cracked. Check out their prices on this repair. 573.00 for the manifold and gaskets, 101.67 for the belt and coolant. 390.00 in labor. That's a total of 1064.67 And it gets worse, O by the way your trans is shot. The total bill is for $3100.00. Somebody got hosed on that one. Got it all back together and no leaks so far. That's interesting that Steve's plastic manifold is flat on the gasket surface. When I was at advance auto I had them checking a bunch of model years for the right type of gasket I needed. I had them check from 96 to 2005 4.6L and still they couldn't pull anything up. What do you guys think, is the individual gasket an after market thing? Steve is your manifold the Ford Up graded one? I haven't messed with the 98 TC I have in a while. It has the plastic intake as well. It has some of the same problems as this 96 developed. So I have feeling that I will need to do some of the same repairs to it. I'll take a closer look at the gaskets on that one. I should be able to tell, since that plastic gasket frame can be seen beyond the intake manifold edges. I must say the relocation of the egr valve to the center of the manifold in 96 makes this job much more enjoyable. The old style just sucks, to work on.

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
Bolts all looked good not rusty or anything, that one I snapped off must have been week. When the bolt snapped off, I did have to walk away for a few minutes to compose my self. There were a few obscenity's mentioned. For some odd reason the bolt was easy to remove. I thought I might have to spend all day drilling it out of the head. I got lucky on this one. I can see there would be many different torques for the type of gasket, and type of intake.
Check out the nice rat nest under the manifold on this car. http://cmasalvage.com/96cv_imr1.jpg

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
I did break a bolt one one of the swaps. It was the original install from the factory which is what surprised me. I had to do the same thing, walk away and grab some lunch. But came back, sprayed some PB Blaster on it and let it soak for a few minutes. Then I realized I could turn it out by hand.
Here's what it looked like http://richgannon.info/gallery/displ...e.php?pos=-427

Re: What's the torque on the plastic intake manifolds
Yep, I got mine from a dealer in Arizona. I may have the PN somewhere, I don't recall offhand what it was.
Found it: F8AE-9424-CA
