2000 Regal GS Heater Core Replacement

The windows in this car fog up frequently if the AC does not run all the time. I must add small amounts of coolant to it. I suspect that the heater core has a leak. Looking up under the dash it is not obvious how the core is removed. Any information or pictures would be appreciated.

CORRECTION: After closer inspection it appears that the core is okay and the problem is a large leak on the passenger side. During a recent storm the ride side front became drenched. The Buick has some really nice foam padding and insulation beneath the carpet which holds much water. If anyone reading this post knows of a "common" leak point on the Regal right front please let me know.

Yeah but it is a PITA to cleanup the old coolant if the heater core leaks. Most people wind up replacing the complete carpet.

If the engine is consuming coolant you should find out the cause. Common leak point for water intrusion like from rain or snow only are the rubber seals under the passenger side cowling to the HVAC input.

Thanks for the reply. I will check the gasket on the firewall. Finally got it all dryed out.

Another issue, do you (or others) happen to know the size of the nut that holds the front hub assembly to the half shaft. I have an ABS problem with the front left wheel and thus have bought a new Timken replacement. I do not have a socket that large so I will have to purchase one. Looks like 1 3/8" or 35mm???

Either 35mm or 36mm. Last hub I replaced in a '99 LS the axle nut was 36mm. It was the original (OE) Delco hub not an aftermarket brand.

I removed the hub assembly this evening. The nut on the half shaft is 36mm. I did not have a 36mm socket so it was an excuse to visit Sears and purchase tools. Now I have a complete selection and a new nifty 1/2" ratchet that lets me apply a bunch of torque.

The three bolts on the back are a bit difficult to get to but with a combination of extensions and sockets were removed.

My thirteen year old son helped me. Each time we do something like this it is a good learning event for him. I think he likes the grease.
