Lincoln LS with no reverse

Any suggestions, Lincoln LS with no reverse, transmission has been inspected, no obvious problems.

Last edited by Arjand; 12-05-2009 at 07:21 AM. Reason: it seems like the reverse servo isn't getting an fluid. Air tested, and it did seem to leak off at one of the valves.

Re: Lincoln LS with no reverse

Did you find a "cure"? I have a 2001 Lincoln LS V8 with 330,000 miles on it. It has been one hell of a car, but after about 315,000 miles the reverse stopped working.

Re: Lincoln LS with no reverse

I have an 02 with the 3.9ltr eng over 100,000 mile the reverse went out on it. There was no slipping or intermittent only indication was a couple times when you tried to shift into reverse that you had to use extreme force to get the shifter to move into the reverse position. I took it to 4 trans shops without telling what any of the other shops said and telling them the symptoms. All 4 come to the same diagnosis after using their scan tool, that is the reverse band in the trans had broke. All suggested a complete rebuild although they would do just the repair for couple hundred less. Reason for rebuild is the reverse band is the first band to go in and the last to come out during the fix. The rebuild from all 4 was about $1500 for everything with 6 mo warranty. this was about 2 yrs ago still have not had it fixed wife is still driving without reverse just parks where she doesn't have to back up. All forward gears and shifting works fine except no reverse. Sorry for long post.

Re: Lincoln LS with no reverse

Unfortunately, this cut and paste from the service manual is badly formatted. However, it does list several less drastic possibilities for the cause of having no reverse. (It does list band failure as one possibility.)

Engagement Concern: No Reverse Possible Component Reference/Action
202 — ROUTINE
Powertrain Control System

· PCM, vehicle wiring harnesses, pressure control solenoid C (PC C), shift solenoid B (SSB)

· Carry out on-board diagnostic tests. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for diagnosis and testing of the PCM.

· Go To Pinpoint Test A and Go To Pinpoint Test D .

· Repair as required. Clear DTCs, road test and rerun on-board diagnostic test.
Main Control

· Screws not tightened to specification

· Tighten to specification.

· Separator plate damaged

· Inspect for damage. If damaged, install a new separator plate.

· Contamination

· Disassemble and clean.

· Valves, springs damaged, misassembled, missing, stuck or bore damage

· If damaged or parts are missing, install a new main control assembly. If misassembled, reassemble correctly. DO NOT stone, file or sand valves. This will remove the anodized finish and may result in further main control or transmission damage.

· Filter damaged, missing

· Inspect for damage, repair as necessary.
Direct Clutch Assembly

· Seals, piston damaged

· Inspect or damage. Repair as necessary.

· Check ball damaged, missing, not seating, off location

· Inspect for mislocation, poor seating, damage. Install a new cylinder.

· Friction elements damaged or worn

· Inspect for damage. Repair as necessary.

· Return springs damaged

· Inspect for damage. Repair as necessary.
Reverse Servo

· Servo retaining screws damaged

· Inspect for damage. Repair as necessary.

· Seals (piston and cover) damaged

· Inspect for damage. Repair as necessary.
Reverse Band

· Band damaged

· Inspect for damage. Repair as necessary.

· Servo worn or damaged

· Inspect for damage. Repair as necessary.
Reverse Drum Assembly

· One-way clutch damaged

· Inspect for damage. Install a new drum assembly.

· Bearing damaged

· Inspect for damage. Install a new drum assembly.
Torque Converter Assembly

· Torque converter internal failure preventing engagement, piston release

· Remove the transmission. Inspect for damage. Refer to Torque Converter in this section. If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria or is damaged, install a new or remanufactured torque converter.
