I read about that a few days ago. Imo it's somewhat a case of a reporter reciting the one-sided propaganda that the pirates have fed to him.
I strongly suspect it's bogus. Egalitarian pirates? Please  . It's a contradiction in terms. It's more likely the pirates are scamming the gullible the same way they scam shipping companies. They already rely on the starving and the desperate to risk their lives and do the dirty work.

Don't underestimate the stupidity of people.
There are kidnapping cases related to those Nigerian fax/email scams. Some people actually flew over there and got held for ransom.
