O/d off light flashing 1995 explorer

I read many Horror stories about this problem after experiencing the same problem on my 1995 Eddie Bauer.

I experienced this problem about a month ago including rough shifting in and out of the low.

My mechanic said it was probably the transmission (103,000 miles). I went to a transmission shop and one of the first statements from the owner went something like this: "thank God for Ford transmissions because their frequent failures keep my business open".

After that discouraging comment, I went back to my mechanic and he read the failure codes in the on board computer.

Now, this is where it gets screwy. He scanned the PCM and found #116 ECT Sensor out of range. Also the 326 EGR Signal was too low. Additionally, the #538 Cylinder Balance code was our of range. Finally, the transmission First Gear code showed an incorrect ratio. (I have absolutely no idea what I am talking about!)

He suggested that these items be fixed first because the symptoms indicated the engine was running too cold and the computer was stuck in the startup mode and was never able to transition into the normal hot engine mode.

He found the thermostat defective and stuck open. Also he found the DPFE Sensor defective.

After the repairs, he reset the codes and the O/D OFF flashing light never came back on. Additionally, The transmission no longer shifts rough and the gas mileage has increased about 20%.

Short story, the Eddie Bauer is now running great with no prior symptoms. Go figure!!

I hope this helps someone.

Cheers and Merry Christmas.........screw the ACLU!!
