Bum heater

My 2001 Olds Intrigue's heater blows cold air. The coolant gets hot, but doesn't circulate through the heater core. I checked the core circulation by disconnecting the heater hoses and blowing air through; clean coolant comes out the other end. At the engine end of the heater hose connections, there's a black, cylindrical component. It's screwed into in a cast aluminum coolant manifold and appears to be an electric control valve. With the controls set to heat, I measured 12v and 5 v on two adjacent pins in its 5 pin connector. Could this component be a faulty heater control valve?

Re: Bum heater

I believe that the cooling system is designed to continually flow coolant through the heater core, and there's no HVAC coolant control valve. I'm assuming you have the 3.5 Engine. The Black Cylinder that's screwed into the aluminium coolant crossover is the EGR Valve.

Check for air in the system, There is a coolant bleeder valve on the passanger side of the radiator near the top. A little winged valve that screws out. Do both heater hoses get hot when attached and running the car? If so you have flow, but you've got a problem with the blend doors of the HVAC System, or the controller itself.

Good Luck--
