02 Custom anti-lock + lights on

02 Custom 109k,

The Service Vehicle Soon, Antilock brake, and trac off lights on. Here is the strange thing: Vehicle Parked, engine running, Transmission in Park, no lights on but Turning the steering wheel 1/2 turn to the right mentiioned lights come on, turn off vehicle and restart no lights on. Again turn wheels left from center just a little over a full turn and mentioned lights come on, turn off vehicle and restart and lights remain on.

I took vehicle for test drive and front bearings seemed to be OK.

I am thinking it is a bad wire on the left front wheel sensor. If not to cold tommorrow I will try to find out problem. Friends Car.

Any thoughts or advice. Thanks

Check the wheel sensor wiring first but you may have a bad wheel sensor. Since they are part of the wheelbearing assembly the bearing may be good but the sensor may be bad. If the wiring checks out then have the car scanned with an ABS capable scanner. This will give you an idea of what is going on and which sensor is bad.

Re: 02 Custom anti-lock + lights on

I have not been able to diagnose the problem yet because of cold weather and illness but now the owner says the lights have not been on for the past few days so it makes believe that the wires on one the sensors are loose or corrided. WHen I get the chance to inspect I will post the results of my findings.

thanks for help

Re: 02 Custom anti-lock + lights on

I have that same problem with my 02 century. I took it to firestone and they put it on the machine and they said it was the speed sensor. The sensor is around 17-20 bucks...HOWEVER....in order to get it fixed you would have to get a new wheel hub which firestone quoted me a price around $500. I didn't get it fixed and i have had my car a year now and the lights came on maybe a month after I got the car. I hope that helped!

Thanks jbrown for the info, I have not ivesticated yet because of the weather and mainly because the lights have not come back on since mid December which makes me believe it is loose or corroded wires. Will update when I find the problem.

Re: 02 Custom anti-lock + lights on

I had the same light problem with a 99 Century. Dealer said it needed a lf wheel hub and they quoted a price of $480.
I bought a new hub and put it on myself, it was an easy job. The lights came back on. I took it to a shop where I usually go and they put it on a scanner which said it was the rf hub or any other sensor. My mechanic disconnected the sensors and sprayed the wires with contact cleaner then blew them dry and I have not had the light problem again.
The hub I replaced was ok. Kind of a waste of $141.

I'm not sure what Firestone is talking about for $17-$20 unless its the repair connector for the vehicle side of the harness, because the wheel speed sensor is an integral part of the hub and not replaceable by itself.

Re: 02 Custom anti-lock + lights on

The light's again came on this past week along with a sqeaking noise one time which scred the owner. Today I checked the front pads to make sure they were not down to wear plate and they had plenty left. I then took disconnected the lead wire to the abs sensor and searched for a possible bad wire on the drivers side . I did find a broken wire about 8 inches from the connector to the wheel sensor, repaired and test drove. The lights never came back on while I drove it so hopefully fixed.
