Transfer gear grind????

I just bought a 2001 Tracker, 2.0, auto, automatic 4X hubs. It's as sweet as they get. The 4 wheel drive works just great but it seems that the transfer case wants to grind if I try to shift from 2H to 4H while moving even at speeds low as 30mph. I have 2 other trackers that are smoother shifters.

Also, do you have to roll in reverse a few feet to unlock the '01 auto hubs like the older ones? And, will Manual hubs from my '96 swap out okay with this '01???
