Tamiya TS-51? ...Focus WRC01

I'm just starting to get back into modelling again and have found the Tamiya Ford Focus WRC01 (#24241) that I want to do.



Looking at the paints, I need TS-51 (telefonica/racing blue) but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Has this paint been discontinued, and if so, is there an alternative that I could use instead?

I know hiroboy.com sells a set of Martini paints & also telefonia blue under Zero Paints. Theyre airbrush paints however

Thanks, just had a quick look on hiroboy.com. Ideally i'd like the spray can but I've just came across a post on here about the Tamiya spray paints being recalled due to having unacceptable levels of lead in them, is this true?

I'm hoping something like this from Humbrol might do the job -

Yes there is an issue with the labelling system, I think its more to do with the fact that the labels dont meet EU regulations... I've had the same problem.

I too used Humbrol and personally they were crap - I'm not the only one who's had problems, just google it... ever since they moved production from the UK the quality control has gone down significantly.

There are some users who get on with Humbrol perfectly however.

I couldn't resist getting an airbrush, now that I have one all I buy is paints from hiroboy (zero).

My advice is to probably get a cheap can of humbrol and try it out on a spare part and see how you get on.

I once sprayed Humbrol Varnish over a car coated with Humbrol Gloss black paint (the paint had cured for two weeks).... and the varnish ate the paint..... I could understand if it was a different brand and not even the same type of paint/varnish (acrylic).....go figure

There is alot of support for Halfords spray paints, many modellers in the uk use them including their primer - plus I think Halfords can produce custom paint for you too so I would certainly check them out over the humbrol!

Halfords colour match paint mixing service offers 48,000 colours including colours for classic cars and motorbikes. Use the correct coloured primer and remember: if you're using metallic paint, over-spray the finish with lacquer to get the correct shine.

TS-51 is still available in France but renewal of Tamiya products takes a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time since a few months...

I tried TS-51 before for this model and to be honest I found it to be a little bit too dark against the decals.....

Thanks for the advice, i've got a Halfords nearby so i'll check out their paint.

EDIT: I take it I should be looking to get the acrylic spray paint rather than the enamel spray?

If you go with the Halfords own brand paint they are all acrylics not enamels. I'd stick with the acrylics. They dry a lot faster as well.

Yeah I would go for acrylic if your just starting out, its easier to work with and more forgiving. Enamels look very good but they are usually quite 'territorial' .... you have to careful with it as it can eat other types of paint, but the finish is usually excellent!

Thanks for the link, interesting read!

I also need a 'subaru blue', does anyone know of any Halfords car paints which replicate it? There were so many blues in there from the likes of Ford, Vauxhall, Volvo, Honda etc but none for Subaru.

I wondered if anyone knows of any that would do the job?
