how can you tell if the motor is dual cam or single on a 1998 3000gt base

'97-'99 bases are SOHC...the DOHC will say "DOHC" right on the valvecover

Yup, if it is a 98 and it is a base it is a SOHC.

Don't let the fact of it being SOHC scare you away. THe horsepower ratings are off, a lot according to Mitsubishi's rating. The DOHC is overrated, and the SOHC underrated.

The SOHC is closer to 180 hp, and the DOHC closer to 205 hp. The SOHC is also very torquey and has low end grunt. I've shocked some TT owners who have ridden in my car. They all commented on how torquey it was and how it wasn't near as slow as they would have thought.

If its automatic though, no matter if its DOHC or SOHC, the car will feel slow. The gearing of the auto kills it off the line.
