Unhappy Ls moves side to side and driving me insane!!!!!

I have a 2001 Lincoln Ls 92k and the car sway back in forth that i can hardly control on the street especially uneven pavement. I just recently got my control arm and lower ball joint replace(driver) and scared that would cause injuries to myself, kids, and motorist. Any suggestion!!

When the suspension parts were replaced I trust you also had the car aligned. Assuming the alignment shop knew what they were doing and they inspected the front end at the time for other loose parts, the next thing I'd suggest you check is the tire pressure to make sure the pressures are what the door sticker recommends, not what's on the tire sidewall. This can affect driveabilty. Following that confirmation, I'd start moving tires around, 2 at a time, to see if that has an impact on the way it drives. Be sure to observe direction of rotation of the tires as well. If your car has "directional" tires on it currently, and they were moved from side to side at one point so now the tires are rotating backwards, that could impact driveability as well.

Re: Ls moves side to side and driving me insane!!!!!

I have the same issue. I also work in an auto shop. The lincoln LS wears tires very specific to its suspension. When I rotate my tires it gets crazy in the front end for about 1000 miles till they start to wear to the front suspension. Does it with new tires when you rotate as well. If you rotate your tires do it every 2000 miles instead of 5k and you won't see such an issue. Freaked me out too.

I experienced the same thing also. It drove me nuts for almost a year. I had everything checked out. A reply to a posting on this site directed me to a 4 wheel alignment and 4 wheel balance. That did the trick for me. My car runs out smooth, straight and now it is quiet.

I agree on the alignment. My wife and I both had LS's, hers a 2002 V6 and me a 2004 V8. Neither had odd tire wear or tracked funny. I checked the tires every time I had it on jackstands (changing oil, trying to get the squeak out of the brakes, etc.) and they always wore fine. No issues when rotating them either.

Aleutian, what kind of tires were you running?

Re: Ls moves side to side and driving me insane!!!!!

I've had similar experience when I had my '00 Lincoln LS. I'm not sure if it's the same problem but it might be worth taking a look at. problem was the balljoint on the spindle. it was to the point where the steering wheel was tilted 90degrees while driving straight. I'm hoping this is not the case for you since that balljoint was not cheap to replace. good luck!!
