Exclamation Starter problem 99 neon

ok like i said i got a 99 neon 2.0 dohc and the starter has been acting up i pulled the starter to have it checked and it checks out fine. now the problem it doesn't make a grinding noise when trying to start it it just spins over like the solenoid isnt kicking it out but i can see it is teeth on the flex plate are still square none missing then i tried to take a jumper wire from the battery to the unplugged solenoid to turn it on directly but it still does the same thing however by tapping on the solenoid once in a while it will start the car. the starter will also turn the motor over but then it kicks out after a second or so. Also there is a new battery in it. i got 12.3v at the starter. WTF is going on the spacer plate inbetween the motor and tranny is still there could it be that it might be pushed in to far and the starter is going past the flexplate? i really dont know i pulled that starter out 3 times now and bench tested it and it works like it is suppose to. please help before i take my 12 gauge after it then maybe the deer rifle.

Re: Starter problem 99 neon

Sounds like the starter drive is bad, which is the gear on the motor. It has a one way clutch built into it that will slip and cause that.
