2004 desert runner

I was looking into buying a 2004 v6 desert runner, automatic. Is the shifter suppose to moved up and down, I mean like beside moving it from drive and park, the truck i was looking at the shifter moved up and down freely as i was putting it into drive, while in drive you are still able to moved the shifter lever up and down. Is this normal, my ohter truck dont do this, and has anyone come across ticking nosie from the enigne while cold and goes away when warm. the guy at the dealer said it might just need a oil change???
