Driver side window

my driver side window dont work. it was like this when i bought the truck. but the driver side does control the passenger side window. could this be something as simple as a bad switch? or does it go deeper like a regulator or motor? what other vehicles can i get a switch off of? i tried an explorer and a conversion van. both different. goin to the u-pull-it yard tomorrow morning.

Re: Driver side window

You would need to do some troubleshooting to know which part is bad. Do you have a volts guage? If you do and it moves to the left when you hit the switch, that would be a good indication that the motor is bad or something is stuck. Otherwise you need to remove the door panel and do some voltage checking, etc. I hope you have another vehicle to drive when you tear this apart.

Re: Driver side window

If you can get to the switch wire connections and trade the places of the two outer wires. If the window now goes up, it's the switch.

Re: Driver side window

How do i know if i need a regulator or motor for the window? What exactly does the regulator do? I pulled it all apart. I unplugged the window motor. When i put the testlight into the connections i have power when i hit the up switch but no power when i hit the down switch. Also i can hear the motor click on the up button but not the down. I tried 3 different switches from the junkyard and all of them did the same thing. Still no window down. Thinking about just drilling out the rivets and replacing the motor........

It's a 12v motor, the switch just reverses the polarity. When you remove the motor, I would pull it apart, you might find something obvious. I would apply a 12v source after it's removed to see what it does, then dissect it.

Re: Driver side window

when i put power to the window motor it will go down. then the switch works to make it go back up. the wire i used to make it go down is bigger than the wires that plug into the window motor. so why does the wire heat up so much that it starts to melt the casing around the wire?
