Question Multiple Computer Codes - 2002 Ford F150 4.2L Engine

2002 Ford F150 4.2L Engine

The OD light is blinking as well and the CEL is of course ON.

Doesn't all that showing up at once indicate that the main engine computer (ECU, ECM, PCM, etc..) is probably fried?

Have any of you seen all these codes on your truck and it was the computer or was it actually ALL or 1 of these items?

I have recommended he try a new used computer. What ya'll think?

Curiously enough the shop told him that his catalytic converters were bad (2 shops said that), but that really was quite unbelievable to me. He has about 140k miles on it too.

Re: Multiple Computer Codes - 2002 Ford F150 4.2L Engine

GEEESE! or a damaged wire bundle. It it running as bad as it looks? Got to be running in default mode. Which will get you home but that's about it. Trying to fallow the Cat theory, does it stall out after a sudden op.temp increase and resemble a jumped timing chain when attempting to restart? Back fire? The manuf. specific codes are additional circuit failures & an actual short circuit! One of the failures is the ignition system monitor circuit. I think I'd check for a damaged wire bundle especially around a high heat source. A clogged Cat can get white hot. (Usually before they explode. I wish I were kidding! I was doing 70 mph at the time) I'd start w/ the wires & connection sockets of the o2 sensors. You definitely have a dead short somewhere in the mix! 140k is about right if he's a habitual higher than 87 octane user. That's the quickest way to kill Cats! I found out the hard way.

Exclamation Re: Multiple Computer Codes - 2002 Ford F150 4.2L Engine

I am doing this for a friend & his brothers as they are not technical people nor do they have the equipment I have. Currently all i know is that it runs rough. Spark plugs and wires have been replaced since the codes and the exhaust was removed to rule out the cats. Problem (running rough) still exists.

I have "moderately" looked around the engine bay for damaged wiring and I don't see any.

Your info about the wiring just made me think to go search the manufacturer specific fault codes. I forgot I could find that info on the net too (like everything) and sure enough, wiring.

I really think he computer is just fried and is causing all this, but I will check the wiring too.

Re: Multiple Computer Codes - 2002 Ford F150 4.2L Engine

When you check the Manuf. Specific error codes, it lists 1 in specific that denotes "a circuit short to ground". If it does in fact exist, that would wreck havoc w/ the computer & will do the same w/ a replacement unit. The fact that it is able to report the short implies the unit is tolerating it w/o catastrophic failure. However, a boneyard replacement unit is only $30-$60 bucks. Thats a relatively cheap date and not that bad a bet, considering your more than knee deep in Sh*t w/ your "plethora".....no, "Virtual Cornucopia of Error Codery"! Ruling out the Computer would help reduce the amount of time spent starring under the hood w/ a constipated look on your face! That's the part of car repair that takes the "F" out of "FUN" and puts it in "_UCKED"! But maybe that's just be me. OBD2 codes (The complete can of worms): Ford OBD-II Trouble Codes

Thanks, Repair shops have their place, but as the vehicles get newer, they tend to loose interest & expertise in the more.......mature vehicles. Our educated guesses tend to be less expensive than theirs many times, because of a basic difference between goals. The logistics of our money. It's in our wallet, and they want it in theirs. Although it is true that if you throw enough parts at a problem, eventually it will go away. But alas, so does our money. Anyway, posting progress and outcomes is the backbone of any help forum and allow the helpers to hone their skills and keeps it interesting for everybody & is appreciated! Otherwise, it quickly degrades to: "Your fulla SH*T!" "No, I'm not!"" Yes you are!" And then it really gets bad: "I'm more fulla "SH*T than you!" "No, your not!"" Yes, I am!" Ya see what I mean? When was the last time your mechanic shared something about themselves. Like the first compliment they said to their soon to be wife, at the school dance: "You know, for a fat girl.................You sure don't sweat much!!!" Yep! This is a special place! I need to post this now, before my wife reads it! She said "Nex time U be putin R bidness out inda street, she gonna woop sum "A"! I think she was sincere, and she is a woman of her word!

Re: Multiple Computer Codes - 2002 Ford F150 4.2L Engine

I know you looked, but I still think you guys are probably missing ground somewhere. Remember kiss, ground is the common source to all these codes.....
I don't know the model specifically, but when worked for a gm dealer there was a ground wire one the very back of the engine by the intake that mice seemed to love, and you wouldn't find it unless you had a schematic. Run a jumper to major points too, like from the negative post straight to the block, frame, cab, and see if you can narrow it down.....
